It’s summer time again hooray! I’ve just woken up and staggered down to my kitchen, but feeling too hot to have my usual morning hot coffee.
So thought I’d try something different today, a refreshing cup of iced coffee to cool me down. I’ve tried adding ice cubes to my iced coffee but no no no never do that! It waters it down and I ended up drinking just watered down coffee which tastes awfull!
The secret to making a good iced coffee is… Coffee Ice Cubes!
What are Coffee Ice Cubes?
It’s strong brewed coffee cooled and poured into ice cube trays, and then frozen.
Why should you make them?
Now here’s a typical example. One morning I woke up late and was rushing to get ready for work. I brewed my coffee but it was too hot to drink and didn’t have time to hang around until my coffee cooled down. It also didn’t help that I left my coffee thermos mug at work the day before…
Suddenly I remembered I had coffee ice cubes in my freezer. Ah just the thing I thought, so I put a few cubes in my cup of brewed coffee.
It not only cooled it down but left my coffee strong ’til the last drop. They also add a little more more coffee to your cup.
I now make and freeze a batch of coffee ice cubes so that I’ve got plenty in the freezer all the time.
My children just love it, they just walk up to the freezer and drop a couple of cubes into their coffee and then settle down to a good old chin wag!!
I also introduced my mates to coffee ice cubes in their coffee and they said ‘what a brilliant idea!’. Now my coffee mornings go on for-ever! No-one wants to go home!
I store my coffee ice cubes in resealable plastic freezer bags. Never be tempted to use ordinary ice cubes in your coffee, it will be a disaster!!
How I’ve been making my Coffee Ice Cubes
It’s so easy, even I can do it!!
Brew your coffee strong and leave to cool, then pour into ice cube trays and leave in freezer overnight as the cubes must be frozen solid.
If you want to make room for more ice cubes, shake them out of the tray and store in resealable plastic freezer bags.
If you prefer Coffee and Cream Ice Cubes, you will need to blend one can of evaparated milk with strong brewed coffee, and once cooled, pour into ice cube trays and freeze overnight.
But if you’d prefer Sweet Coffee and Cream Ice Cubes, blend one can of sweetened condensed milk with strong brewed coffee, and once cooled pour into ice cube trays and freeze.
Are they just for Iced Coffee?
No! They’re perfect for adding to your homemade coffee liqueur, or any store bought varieties like Tia Maria, Kahlua or Baileys. It’s also great a mocha coffee punch to add an extra dimension to the flavor and texture!
If you fancy a milky coffee, just pour some cold milk into a glass, add coffee ice cubes and stir well.
