There’s been a craze sweeping through the world of coffee for a while now – having coffee with butter.
If this is the first you’re hearing of this, and if you’re anything like me, you’re probably having three thoughts right now:
- That sounds dangerous to your health.
- That sounds unappetizing.
- That sounds like something Homer Simpson would do.
The actual truth is:
- It isn’t. It’s actually very good for you (when done correctly – you must use grass fed butter)
- It isn’t. It’s creamy and delicious!
- You’re right – he does!
Homer: “Oh, Marge, how could you let me let myself go like this?”
Marge: “Me? I’m not the one who puts butter in your coffee.”
(From The Simpsons episode ‘King of the Hill’)
However, it isn’t to blame for Homer’s weight gain. In fact, if he hadn’t been drinking coffee with butter he’d actually be much fatter.
Coffee with butter burns fat and makes you feel full
Grass fed butter is full of essential fats and calories. The shared wisdom around fats and calories are that they’re the enemy of weight loss.
This blanket approach is simply not true – these essential fats and calories will fill you up and give you the energy you need until lunch. No snacking necessary – in fact, no other breakfast is needed because this slow release energy source is all you need to see you though. It’s even more efficient than oatmeal in that sense.
And essential fats are just that – they’re fats which your body needs, but is unable to produce by itself. To avoid essential fats is to put your health at risk.
Grass fed butter also contains CLA (Conjugated Linoelic Acid). If you’ve ever tried using fat burning pills to lose weight, you’ll recognize CLA – it’s just that, a fat burner. So you’ll not only feel full and not feel the need to snack, you’ll also burn more calories.
It’s really, really good for you
Only grass fed butter has the right nutrition, and it doesn’t stop there. Omega-3 fatty acids (more essential fatty acids, or EFAs) protect your body from heart disease and improve cognition and brain health. The right balance of Omega-6 to Omega-3 will do the trick and that balance is found in?
You’ve guessed it – your new friend grass fed butter.
So you can add increased concentration and heart health to the list of goodness.
How To Make Coffee with Butter
Brew your coffee as normal, and then add 1 tablespoon of unsalted grass fed butter (Kerrygold is a popular brand) for each mug.
You will need to use a good blender to blend the mixture together since oil and water won’t mix without a fight.
Ever heard of Bulletproof Coffee?
Although our man Homer Simpson has been doing this since 1998, Dave Asprey is credited with bringing this to the mainstream in 2010 with his cocktail called Bulletproof Coffee.
To make it bulletproof, you’d also throw in 1 tablespoon of Organic Coconut Oil, or a custom made MCT Oil (coconut oil is an MCT oil). MCT oil has similar and complimentary properties to grass fed butter.
But aren’t these high in saturated fat?
Yes, they are. But in moderation that isn’t a bad thing. Saturated fat has been demonized with a heavy hand, when the scientific truth is that in small mounts’ it’s good for you.
Here’s a video by Dave Asprey on his concoction, but I just want to make it clear that you do not need to buy Dave’s Bulletproof brand coffee or MCT Oil for you to have Bulletproof Coffee – regular coffee and coconut oil are perfectly fine.
But of course, buy his stuff if you feel that it’s something you want to do!
So I hope this has helped you discover a new way to enjoy coffee. Let me know your experiences below!
